We are now about halfway into the renovation project and the hotel is starting to come back together.
Guestroom wallpaper and carpet is nearing completion, furniture is starting to go back in the rooms and arrival of the last containers of furniture will be here next week. The hallway corridor carpet will arrive soon and be the last step before reopening.
Landscaping and painting of the building is 75% completed, the swimming pool has been drained, acid etched and refilled, the pool deck will get a new coating starting next week. The hot tub has been completely redone.
Public space most of the banquet rooms are wallpapered and carpeted.
Regarding the staff, we are planning a job fair to rehire our staff the last week of January with orientation and training the first 2 weeks of February.
Everything is looking fantastic. We are still on schedule for a February 20, 2010 re-opening.

The San Francisco Convention and Visitors Bureau is launching a great Escape To The City Campaign that gives special offers to local Northern California residents to visit the beautiful city by the bay, San Francisco.
And what better place to stay at when you’re visiting San Francisco than the Handlery Union Square? I don’t know of any. So check out the great deals San Francisco is offering (like the King Tut exhibit at the De Young Museum) and escape–to the city!

San Francisco’s Handlery Union Square Hotel is proud to now be a pet friendly hotel. On July 6, we celebrated the launch of the dog policy with our employees bringing their dogs to work! Don’t worry, pictures are coming soon. We had dogs of all shapes and sizes (within the 40 pound weight limit, of course) joining our staff in office areas.
Since we are located just steps from Union Square and prime dog walking trails, we know our guests with pets will love to stay at the Handlery.
We look forward to seeing more dogs as guests!

San Francisco’s Handlery Union Square Hotel is definitely unique. It is one of the last family-owned and operated hotels left in the city. It also has the even rarer outdoor heated pool in downtown San Francisco. I also bet you didn’t know about the still-operating early 1900s era mail shoot. It’s a mail shoot that goes from the 8th floor to the lobby, where a historic brass mailbox sits. Most hotels have these shoots and mailboxes for historical design, but at the Handlery Union Square–it actually works.
The Atlanta Business Chronicle has highlighted how rare it is for a hotel do undergo a multi million dollar renovation during a recession. But we are committed to providing our guests the very best experience and are willing do to what it takes–even spending more money when others are cutting back. Here’s a sneek peak at what’s to come.

Visitors often associate downtown San Francisco with crowded streets, fabulous shopping, and busy restaurants. Who knew that in the heart of downtown San Francisco, at the Handlery Union Square Hotel, there was a quiet oasis away from it all?
Yes, that photo above is the actual outdoor heated pool at the Handlery Union Square Hotel in downtown San Francisco. The pool is located in an outdoor courtyard that adjoins the Handlery Hotel’s two buildings–the Historic boutique section and the more spacious and modern Club section.
And yes, the pool is a “real pool”. One of three pools in San Francisco, as a matter of fact. The pool is heated at a constant 80 degrees (because it’s no fun splashing around in cold water in San Francisco fog) and is 6 feet deep. It is a “real pool”.
Just thought you’d like to know another “secret” about the Handlery Union Square.

San Francisco Pride Weekend is finally upon us. If you’re staying with us at the Handlery Union Square Hotel, simply walk a couple blocks down to Market Street to see the parade. Or, take the BART to the Civic Center area, where the celebration begins.

The San Francisco Pride Parade is THIS weekend, June 27. The Handlery Union Square Hotel is an official partner of the San Francisco Pride Organization. We have an excellent location where you can see the parade pass by. Remember, our fun package includes parade goodies like hats, feather boas, and mardi gras beads plus FREE valet parking–a must to have in downtown San Francisco during a busy day.
