Hawaiian Helicopters. Spectacular views, a comfy ride, knowledgeable and experienced pilots are just a
few of the reasons TheMaui News readers voted Blue Hawaiian Helicopters Best Air Activity on Maui. Shhh!: The shining stars of the fleet is the ultra-quiet ECO-Star helicopters. This model is the first helicopter in history designed specifically for air touring, and Blue Hawaiian was not only instrumental in its development, but it was the launch customer that introduced it to the world. “That aircraft is really special because not only did we help develop it, but it’s quieter for our neighbors on the ground,” CEO Patti Chevalier explained. Learning curve: The Blue Hawaiian experience is like entering a classroom in the sky with pilots as teachers. “Not only are they excellent pilots, but they’re fabulous teachers as well,” Chevalier said, adding that the companies pilots are all certified Hawaii state tour guides. Riding in style: Hop aboard the “Cadillac of helicopter tour companies.” In addition to the latest safety technology, including a terrain mapping system, emergency floats and high-visibility pulse lights, the helicopters nclude air conditioning, noise-canceling headsets, two-way communication systems, and multiple video cameras to record every sky-high moment. What they said: “The people I work with are the most dedicated and hard working crew that I know. We really got this award because of them,” Chevalier said. What we said: “Blue Hawaiian leads effort for quiet helicopters.”—Kathy Tobin of Makawao. Contact Info: Located at 105 Kahului Heliport. Best Restaurant General Store and Mama’s Fish House Tie

Published by pennysplace under Places to Eat

Best Restaurant OVERALL comes up with a tiegeneral-store.jpg
Hali‘imaile General Store ties with Mama’s Fish House Since the “H” in Hali‘ imaile
General Store precedes the “M” in Mama’ s in the alphabet, we’ ll lead off with this world-famous Upcountry landmark that will celebrate its 20th anniversary in November. What she says: “This award couldn’t have come at a more appropriate time — seeing that Hali‘imaile General Store will be celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Who would have ever thought, when we opened Oct. 14, 1988, in the middle of nowhere, that 20 years later our restaurant would be internationally known? It even put the town of Hali‘imaile on the world map,” says famous Chef Beverly Gannon, who owns the restaurant with her husband, Joe Gannon. “We’re in great company, too. Winning the same Best Overall category as Mama’s will hopefully get some of their customers
coming to us!” Beverly continues that part of the reason for H.G.S.’s success is, “we offer people a taste of the REAL Maui. It’s very obvious people who come to our island want to experience things that are outside of the mainstream tourist areas.” www.bevgannonrestaurants.com

mamas.jpgMama’s Fish House Restaurant & Inn Situated right on the beach in Kuau, Mama’ s epitomizes to our visitors what Maui is all about with its fresh catch, over-the-top island decor and knowledgeable service.
What she said: “Mama’s Fish House opened in the fall of 1973, which makes us 35 years young this year!” says Karen Christenson Marshall, vice president and daughter of the owners Floyd and Doris Christenson. “I often tell people that back then folks thought Mama’s wouldn’t make it for two reasons: location in the middle
of nowhere, and you’re serving fish?! In those days, people went to a restaurant to eat steak, not fish, but fish was cheap and we had fishermen willing to deliver it to us. Then the world discovered how special Hawaiian fish are and how good it is for you. “As for location, in the ‘olden days’ visitors didn’t rent cars and leave the resort areas. However, Maui became a popular destination and repeat visitors started looking beyond the resorts for an authentic experience and the locals told them about Mama’s. “We have had the support of our local customers all these years and we know that without them, we wouldn’t have ever come this far!” www.mamasfishhouse.com
