Best Beaches for Snorkling

Published by pennysplace under Activities

snorkling.jpgAhihi Keanau Reserve-Although not really a beach, we list Ahihi because it’s the perfect place for beginners and up. This spot is easy to access and has great snorkeling all around. The depth doesn’t vary much and stays between 5-20 feet until you get far out. The beautiful reef is filled with tropical fish. For more information and a map, Click on the photo.

Honolua Bay is one of the most gorgeous spots in the world. The reef is lively and really clear. Where you would normally enter doesn’t have a sand beach, but rock and bolders that are great for enjoying the view. Though this is a famous surfing spot, the inside of the bay is usually undisturbed unless the swell is really large. After walking the trail down through the jungle, the snorkeling is best off to the right side of the bay. If you appreciate the bay and want to use it in the future, go to Save Honolua Bay to learn more. Kamaole beaches

Kihei has some great snorkeling areas. The “3 Kam’s” are 3 beaches that strech across Kihei. The order goes Kam 1 in the North, and Kam 3 in the South. All of these beaches have great beach parks. Kamaole 3 has the largest park and is the most popular with the locals. Snorkeling is good at the points of any of the lava outcroppings.

La Perouse Bay -La Perouse has many areas to Snorkel. If you’re adventurous enough, you’ll be snorkeling your own spot alone. This area is where you’ll find great snorkel opportunities. There are many small sand beaches to enter at, or you can scamper over rocks. In the summer there can be Big South swells that may make entering some areas difficult.

Polo Beach-Polo is a beautiful beach, with the best snorkeling to the right. It has good facilities and lots of fish.

Ulua Beach -After parking at Ulua, go straight down to the beach and you’ll have an option of going left to Ulua, or right to Mokapu. Go to the left and snorkel on the right side of the beach. The left side is often turbulent and not clear. Stay along the rock formation and keep going out. If you’ve got strong lungs, you can go past the first reef to a second reef with a turtle cleaning station. This is an easy place to snorkel, and one of the most wonderful Hawaii beaches to hang out at.

If you’re looking for the best beach Maui has to offer, you need to check out Kapalua in the Northwest for sunbathing, and Ulua for snorkeling. These beaches are Maui’s best because of the tropical coral covered reefs and the perfect white sands. Take advantage of morning hours when crowds are less and the sun isn’t too hot. Remember that with the cool Maui winds come a false-confidence in your not getting burned. Even with the breazes you can be burned in minutes.

Three Top Places to Eat in Lahania

LAHAINA GRILL -Don’t let the name fool you. This “grill” is the swankiest haute-cuisine joint on the island. One storefront from the ocean in the old whaling port of Lahaina, it’s a warmly lit epicurean lahaina-grill.jpgwonderworld of gleaming stemware, starched white tablecloths, and desert pastels beneath the high pressed-tin ceilings of an 1890s building. There’s no view, and that’s fine, because it would only distract from the exquisitely wrought New American cuisine. Tequila shrimp with firecracker rice, Kona-coffee-roasted rack of lamb, and kalua duck quesadillas are among the specialties. The service is so impeccable it’s scary. For foodie couples seeking a serious splurge, Lahaina Grill should be at the top of the list.
mala_ocean-tavern.jpgMALA OCEAN TAVERN - The tiny outdoor lanai of this little bistro by the sea is prime real estate for sunset dining—but it’s got just a handful of tables. Request it when you reserve (which you’ll need to do anyway). After the sun slips into the Pacific, blazing tiki torches keep the deck awash in fiery hues that make everyone and everything look fabulous. Foodwise, Mala’s thinking is lots of organics, lots of whole grains, and no hydrogenated oils or preservatives whatsoever. That goes for everything from the seared ahi bruschetta to the superb beet and Kula goat cheese salad to the Honsin-glazed baby back ribs to the Kobe cheeseburger. The tiny bar, which specializes in exotic martinis and cocktails, hops to life as the night wears on.
ALOHA MIX PLATE - A plate lunch is where protein, starch, and Hawaii’s multiethnic history comemixed-plate.jpg together to stick to your ribs without emptying your wallet. There are plenty of plate-lunch joints on Maui—but not too many with daily drink specials and million-dollar oceanfront views. Mix and match local comfort foods like Hawaiian kalua pig, Japanese shoyu chicken, Chinese roast duck, and Korean kalbi ribs, which are served plate-lunch style with two scoops of rice and one of macaroni salad. In the traditional Hawaiian fashion, seating is all outdoors beneath big shade trees, tarps, and umbrellas. Sailboats bob at anchor just offshore. This is an excellent place to experience local food, watch the sunset, and sip a couple of sassy wahines.

Check out the above for private rooms for the rehersal dinner or for your wedding reception

Planning a Beach Wedding Part 2

Published by pennysplace under Wedding Planning

maui-wedding-4.jpg Planning A Beach Wedding Part 2 - What is the tide schedule? How high does the tide get at that particular beach? You will need to plan your wedding time around the tides. The last thing you need is to have to suddenly pack up and leave because the tide is coming in and you didn’t foresee this.

As you’ll probably be planning your wedding several months in advance, you’ll need to determine the type of weather that normally occurs around your wedding date. What will you do if it rains or if the day is unusually cold or extremely hot? You will need to prepare a back up plan for these situations. Be sure to supply this beach wedding information on your wedding invitations so guests will know where to go if there is a sudden change in plans. On the same note, the day may be beautiful for the most part, and then a sudden storm may crop up. Where will you and your guests go? Are there any facilities nearby that you can use to continue with your wedding festivities?

Make sure you take a trip to the beach at the time of day you wish to have your wedding. Check on the noise at the ceremony location. How loud is the traffic from the road? Are there a lot of seagulls around? What about the sound from the crashing waves? All of these can drown out the ceremony and speeches said at your wedding.

Are there mosquitoes at that time of year and how bad are they on the beach area? How can you control them and other bugs?

Some beaches smell bad during certain periods of the day or certain times of the year. Check to be sure that this is not the case during the time period that you’ve chosen. How windy is it on that particular beach? Does it get a gentle breeze or fairly heavy winds? A breeze is nice to keep the bugs away and cool guests off… a steady wind can cause many problems though. Are you thinking of setting up tables or just use blankets laid out on the sand? How will you keep sand and other debris out of your food? Will there be chairs set up at the ceremony for the guests? Who will you hire to do this? Who will you get to take everything down and clean up the beach after the wedding?

By answering these important beach wedding information questions and having a good plan of action, you will avoid many nasty surprises at your event. Too many couples don’t realize all the work involved in planning this type of celebration, and end up frustrated and disappointed. You may want to consider having just the ceremony on the beach with a few close friends and family, and then moving to an indoor location for the wedding reception.

There are many decorations and ideas that you can incorporate to give the reception area a nice beach theme flavor, without having to be outside on an actual beach. Either way, beach weddings can be very romantic and memorable for both the wedding couple and the guests. Just be sure to plan well for all possibilities ahead of time, and you should have a wonderfully romantic wedding day.

Planning a Beach Wedding Part 1

Published by pennysplace under Wedding Planning

maui-wedding-2.jpg

Planning a Beach Wedding - Checking Rules and Regulations Regarding Beach Use. You will need to plan carefully for your beach wedding. There are many laws and regulations regarding the use of beaches, and each varies according to the location you are in.  If it is just you, your mate and a marriage official, then there will be no problem for the most part. However, you can’t just trod out onto an area of a beach with a bunch of people and have a wedding. You will first need to get permission to use the beach (whether it’s a public or private beach) and then determine what is allowed. The following are some of the questions that you will need answered so that you will have enough beach wedding information at hand to make an informed decision:

Is this a public beach or a private beach? If it’s private, who do you need to contact for permission to use it?

Can this particular beach be used for functions such as weddings?

Do you require a special permit to use the beach for a wedding? If so, where do you obtain one and how much does it cost?

Are there any restrooms nearby that can be used? Keep in mind that most of the restrooms found on beaches are often outhouses. Will your guests want to use such a facility?

Are there any recreational buildings nearby that can be used for preparing food, washing dishes, restroom use, running electricity to the beach area, or will be available for shelter in case a rain storm suddenly pops up?

Are you permitted to erect large tents to be used as shade or to protect food from direct sun?
What are the regulations regarding smoking on the beach and the serving of alcohol? Many public beaches won’t permit either. Private beaches tend to be more lenient, provided you keep all cigarette butts in a container and make sure the beach is carefully cleaned after the festivities.

Are you allowed to have a bonfire? What other regulations are there regarding the use of tiki torches, candles, lanterns, etc?

Can you have a specific area of the beach designated for your wedding to keep other beach goers from interrupting your celebration?

Are you allowed to serve food? Are there any trash cans available for garbage disposal or must you supply your own?

Be sure to take the time to gather as much beach wedding information as possible in order to confirm what regulations are in force when using a beach for a wedding ceremony and/or reception. Of course, that is only part of the equation.

Aloha Experience in a Bed & Breakfast

Published by pennysplace under Uncategorized

breakfast.jpgThe bed and breakfast in Hawaii offers a unique experience for the budget-conscious traveler who wants to sample the Aloha lifestyle with down home hospitality. International travelers really have two options for experiencing exotic locations or faraway places: follow the travel brochures to reserve accommodations at glitzy tourist resorts, or venture off the beaten path to discover the culture of the native local people. Vacationers seeking a unique behind-the-scenes experience will appreciate the opportunity to relax in any one of thousands of Maui bed and breakfast (B&B). Unlike hotels, resorts, or luxury residences, renting a bed and breakfast in Hawaii is like visiting a close friend or family member. Resident hosts hospitably open homes to thousands of tourists each year, providing a cozy atmosphere, plus the opportunity to really experience a true island lifestyle. Casual or elegant rental accommodations are available throughout Maui.

In regards to the  popular bed and breakfast there has been some misunderstanding, in the past,  about 03-house.jpgclosing down Maui’s bread and breakfasts.. The fact is that they are closing down vacation rentals  and not the established B & B’s according to Penny from Penny’s Place in Lahaina. Penny’s Place is a bed and breakfast that is up and running and is the best kept secret in Maui and has been awarded 5 stars by TripAdvisor.com and has also been selected as “One of the fifty best B&B’s in Hawaii ” by Frommers Travel Guide. Please come by and meet Penny and enjoy her hospitality Maui Style.  She is happy to greet you and let you know “We are still open and welcoming guests.”  www.pennysplace.net

Trouble in Paradise?

Published by pennysplace under Uncategorized

Like many repeat visitors to the popular Hawaiian island of Maui, Jan Augustine and husband Ken sunset.jpgwouldn’t touch a resort hotel with a 10-foot tiki torch. “We like privacy and quiet,” says Jan Augustine, who has traded Iowa snow for Hawaii sunshine a dozen times over the past 15 winters. “We have no interest in sitting on a beach with a thousand other people.”  But starting this week, lodging options for the Augustines and off-the-beaten-sand Maui travelers like them will dwindle considerably. Effective Jan. 1, an estimated 1,000 unlicensed B&Bs, condominiums and short-term vacation rentals, most along Maui’s scenic Hana Highway or “upcountry” on the slopes of the Haleakala volcano, must shut down or face potential fines of up to $1,000 a day. The crackdown started this summer when county officials, citing complaints of increased noise and traffic in residential areas and a negative impact on the limited supply of affordable housing, decided to enforce a 16-year-old, long-ignored ban on unlicensed rentals outside Maui’s major resort areas of Kaanapali, Kapalua, Makena and Wailea and on the smaller, less-touristed islands of Lanai and Molokai.

For the vacationer please keep in mind that many of Maui’s bread and breakfasts are open and waiting to hear from you.  From Penny of Penny’s Place in Paradise she wants the public to know  “we are  still open and welcoming guests”
