Big Adventure on Top of a Volcano

Published by pennysplace under Activities

While some of the world’s highest and most dangerous mountains lie in the Himalaya, Andes, Karakorum, haleakala.jpg and other high ranges, climbers hoping for big adventure need look no further than the United States.
There are six  American mountains to climb for big adventure and Mount Haleakala, Maui is one of them.  Forming more than 75% of the island of Maui, Haleakala is one of the best places to explore Hawaii’s unique volcanic landscape.

Though the summit is accessible by road and home to astrological observatories, hiking through the national park puts you in touch with the austere and dramatic terrain and provides an opportunity to get close to an active volcano. Like Mount Kea, Haleakala is considered a sacred mountain by native Hawaiians. Also like Mount Kea, its summit is considered one of the best places on earth for viewing the cosmos.

Spending the night on Mount Haleakala is the perfect opportunity to sit back in a sleeping bag, sip some tea, and dream of all the adventures waiting for you under that star-studded mantle.

Screening of Taylor Camp

Published by pennysplace under Events

TAYLOR CAMP Screenings
Saturday, June 13 Castle Theater 5 & 7:30 pm
In 1969 Howard Taylor, brother of actress Elizabeth, bailed out a rag-tag band of 13 young Mainlanders jailed on Kauai for vagrancy and invited them to camp on his oceanfront land in Haena. Soon waves of hippies, surfers and troubled Vietnam vets found their way to Taylor Camp and built a clothing-optional, pot-friendly tree house village at the end of the North Shore road. Government officials torched the tree houses in 1977 after condemning the village to make way for a State park, leaving little but ashes and memories of “the best days of our lives”. 1970s photos and rare historic footage reveal a community that rejected consumerism for the healing power of nature. The film tells the story of Taylor Camp’s seven-year existence through interviews made 30-years later with the campers, their neighbors and the Kauai officials who finally got rid of them. . Please Note: this film contains some nudity, drug use and explicit language. Tickets: $12
Co-sponsored by the Garden Arts Island Council and the Hawaii Ocean Film Festival

Summer Weddings Part III

Published by pennysplace under Wedding Planning

June Wedding Reception

outdoor-wedding-4.jpg1.  String up strands of white lights for soft, subtle lighting inside the tent or around the perimeter of the reception area.

2.  Use seasonal flower centerpieces on the guest tables. Along with roses, summer blossoms include buttercups, daisies, lupine and peonies.

3.  Serve a buffet that mixes hot and cold items. Incorporate seasonal fruits and vegetables, such as strawberries and baby peas along with summery entrées, such as Chicken Picatta or sautéed lemon haddock fillet.

outdoor-reception-3.jpg4.  Add weights to all table linens if the reception is outdoors. Nothing will ruin a wedding faster than tablecloths blowing away. Linen weights are available at most party supply stores.

Summer Weddings Part II

Published by pennysplace under Uncategorized

June and Summer Weddings Part IIJune Wedding Attire

pink-bridal-party.jpg1.  Select a color theme that reflects the colors of June. Consider pairing rosy pinks with buttercup yellow or dusty lilac blue.

2   Wear comfortable clothing. June can be very warm. Select a bridal gown and bridesmaids dresses in lighter fabrics, such as a cotton blend rather than heavy velvet or brocade.

3.  Purchase fashionable wraps that can be worn by bridesmaids if the weather turns cool.

4.  Skip the tuxedos for the groom and his attendants. Instead, opt for lightweight khakis and dress jackets with ties. You still have formal look, but one that is comfortable for a June wedding.
